It hardly needs to be stated that explosive substances require careful handling, and it is therefore not surprising that the European Union has some very strict regulations governing the care and control of explosives. What is rather strange is that companies who need to comply with these regulations turn first to their legal departments, rather than to their engineers.

Read MoreThe Machinery Directive of 2006 was designed to ensure that machinery traded throughout the European Union was of an adequate common safety level. In addition, it covered the free movement of machinery throughout the member states. What is a Machine? Ask an engineer this question, and the response is likely to be a politely raised eyebrow. Ask a lawyer, and settle down for a long debate. Ask one of the IES engineers, in the context of the Machinery Directive, and they will know exactly how to respond, and fairly shortly thereafter they will be able to outline what needs to be done in order to ensure that the client’s products comply with the Machinery Directive.

No business that is involved in the handling of potentially hazardous substances can afford to ignore Process Safety. Failures in this field will at best lead to reputational damage and a loss of shareholder confidence, and at worst to serious injury or death, and to environmental pollution. SIL and Risk Reduction- The two EU directives that comprise what is generally known as ATEX are 99/92/EC and 94/9/EC. Between them, they cover health and safety of workers, and protective systems, in explosive environments.
Read MoreSome words strike terror into the hearts of all right-thinking engineers, and two of them may be ‘project’ and ‘management’. Managing a project is not a skill that comes naturally to people who are usually more comfortable with exploded diagrams and oily bits of machinery. On the other hand, people whose working lives involve managerial tasks may find themselves seriously out of their depth when dealing with engineering projects. It is not surprising that both turn with relief to the experienced Project Managers at IES.
Read MoreAlthough the engineers at IES have a very wide range of skills, there are also those who specialise, and one of the areas in which we have the best of reputations is that of Safety Instrumented Systems. Process Analytical Systems. IES engineers take a systematic approach, guided by experience and a high level of training, to the analysis of industrial methodology and the safety factors involved. They have worked in Food, Life Sciences, Chemicals, Oil, Gas Minerals, Cement, Water and Waste, Steel and other metals, Glass, and more.
Read MoreIES has considerable expertise and experience in the field of skid-mounted pumps. We can offer design and installation services to a wide variety of industries and applications. Because we can call on a multi-disciplinary design and engineering team with an extensive range of experience, skills and qualifications, we are well-placed to discuss the unique demands of each application; whether the problem to be solved concerns the size or location of the pump requirement, the pumpage requirement, or the hazardous or corrosive nature of the liquid or gas.
